About this site
Teaching is a
complex profession that requires educators to possess a bank of professional attributes. These skills include pedagogical knowledge; curriculum
content, planning and assessment knowledge; behaviour and classroom management;
organisational skills; communication; information literacy; team work; information
technology competence; problem solving; critical thinking; cross cultural competence
and ethical practice.
The purpose of this website is to provide pre-service teachers with a professional development resource in relation to what I consider to be the three most important professional skills a beginning teacher needs when entering the classroom for the first time.
In order to determine what these three skills were I conducted an interview with Mrs Allison Weston (pseudonym), who is the Head of Special Education Services at a State school in Queensland. Mrs Weston was asked to identify the three most important skills a beginning teacher would need to possess and asked to elaborate on these skills by providing reasoning as to why the skill was important, the key elements of the skill that contribute to effective teaching and examples of when a graduating teacher may be required to utilise the skill. Mrs Weston identified curriculum and pedagogical knowledge, communication skills and organisation as the three most critical skills.
Following the interview, I consulted relevant literature and reflected upon my own knowledge and experiences to determine which three skills the professional development package would focus on; communication, relationships and classroom management. Whilst I do agree that curriculum and pedagogical knowledge is important, if a teacher cannot communicate effectively, build strong relationships with students, peers and parents, and establish a safe and supportive learning environment; the curriculum and pedagogical knowledge is of little worth. Furthermore, these three skills are interlinked which ensures the development of one will quite often lead to next two.
I acknowledge that many different authors and educators will hold differing views on this topic as there are a vast number of skills a teacher requires to complete their job effectively. With this in mind, Triple C’s to effective teaching focuses on the development of communication, connections and classroom management.
Within this site you will find background information and reference to the relevant literature for each skill and suggested strategies to develop this skill, self-reflective tools and additional resources that you may choose to access at your leisure.
